Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a relatively recent feature (2016) launched for Microsoft Windows, which allows users to run a Linux environment on Windows without needing a separate virtual machine or dual booting. WSL2 is the successor of WSL and aims to improve the original release by providing an actual Linux kernel inside a managed VM, full system call compatibility support, and performance improvement across the Linux and Windows operating systems.
